Broadcast vs. Direct Transmission
Broadcast (Repeater) Transmission
Broadcast Transmission Mode (Normal Operation)
A radio repeater station is located on top of one of the
mountains above Claremont. All dispatch center
messages are transmitted by the repeater. Any radio
transmission received by the repeater is immediately
repeated (retransmitted). All of these broadcast
messages are received by all mobile radios within
range of the repeater (over ten miles).
Mobile radios can NOT transmit and receive at the
same time. They are normally in the receive mode,
only switching to transmit mode by operator action.
Only ONE message can be broadcast at a time.
When one mobile radio is transmitting, all other
mobile radios and the dispatch center hear this
message.
Direct transmission provides more limited communication coverage. The repeater is not involved in this mode. Direct transmission provides radio communication between mobile radios that are in close proximity to each other (approximately 1⁄2 mile). This mode shall be used only when directed to do so.
